Of Hallowed Fiends and Darkest Fortune Excerpt

Happy Hump Day! It is once again time for the Hump Day Hook, where writers get together and share little hooks of a work-in-progress, a new release, or anything of theirs they want to hook you into knowing more about!

If you're interested in being a Hooker yourself, head on over to the Hump Day Hook Blog and add yourself to the list!

For this week's hook, I've chosen Of Hallowed Fiends and Darkest Fortune, my novelette prequel to my WIP Duchess of War now available at Naughty Nights Press. Anya and her husband, the Duke of Eodel, are...shall we say...getting to know one another.

Anya quivered in her rage. This was what came of marriage! You were chattel to a man's every whim! He could lock you in a trunk and haul you to his capitol, or whip you naked through the streets to the castle gate. Her bottom still protested if she sat down carelessly! "I'd rather sleep with the dogs," she whispered. Her heart was racing.

He threw back his head and laughed. "Nonsense!" As if he did it every day, he strode to a nightstand and withdrew a long wooden paddle from one of the drawers. "I would never risk giving my dogs mange with such low-bred company. They are too dear to me." He sat himself down in a chair in the center of the room and beckoned her with a finger. "Lie across my knees, my dove. I do not tolerate my Duchess talking back to me."

Ooooh! I hope she snatches that paddle and clouts him over the head with it. Great hook.

LOL I know, right? Maybe in the sequel, but in this? Well, let's just say it's not the independent, liberated woman of the new millennium's idea of the perfect outcome, lol.
I can feel her rage, what a great excerpt! This is going to be some battle I reckon...

Very true! lol Why divorce when you can declare war instead?
Oh, I'd be shaking with rage too. The condescension...ooh...great hook. I want to throttle him and know more all at once!

hehe That's my Duke, lol. You gotta hate him a bit and at the same time can't quite look away. =) Sometimes I want to throttle him, too, lol.
I hope I'm not supposed to like him, because I don't. Good hook though.

Yeah, the Duke is definitely an acquired taste. =) He has a long road to redemption, the poor dear.
Ooh, I think I can guess what's going to happen next! Great hook.

Caught my attention. Is it wrong of me to think he's an ass? lol! Great hook! :)

Bwahaha! It's totally fine to think he's an ass. He IS an ass, lol. Long road to redemption, my dear Duke has. =)
What an obnoxious man. I hope she's free of him soon. :)

I've been watching The Tudors lately. I say, "Off with his head!" So, your hook got a rise out of me!
Oh, yeah, I'd spit in his face, lol. He's definitely a mean one. I want to see if she continues to put up with him.

Well, considering they're married, she kind of has to for the time being. =)
I know it's a good hook when I immediately dislike a character! Great job!

Oh boy! There's great tension here. I wonder if she complies? Mmmmm??
